Card Values

One thing players need to know is that suits don't matter in blackjack games. In fact, there is only one thing that actually matters in the game: every hand and every card's point value. After all, the game's objective is to reach a total of points higher compared to the dealer without busting, or getting values that equal to more than 21.

  1. Aces have a value of either 11 points or 1 point, depending on what would benefit the player more. Hands with Aces are known as "soft hands" since players can hit and not bust because of how the Ace can either be an 11 or a 1.
  2. Every face card has a value of 10 points.
  3. Every other deck card has a value equal to its own numeric face value.

Why are 10s So Important?

Various reasons exist as to why 10s are so important in blackjack. First of all, there are a lot of 10-value cards inside a deck compared to other values. (16 cards have 10-point values within a single deck of 52 cards. Conversely, every other card only has 4 cards with their same value in 1 deck.)

10s happen to be vital in getting blackjacks, too, because an Ace and a 10 will total 21. Getting natural blackjacks will result in payouts of 3:2, as well, which can make a huge difference to the player's overall advantage.

Why are 5s So Important?

5s give almost no advantage to players because they can easily give players "stiff hands" - hands that can bust easily. If you take every 5 out of a single deck, you can actually turn the edge away from the casino and onto each player with a single change.

In fact, without 10s and 5s, card counting wouldn't even exist. Think about it.
